Mildred Waller Obituary

Mrs. Mildred Hawley Waller, age 77, daughter of the late Mr. Oscar Hawley and Mrs. Beatrice Burton Hawley, was born on August 14, 1948, in Person County, North Carolina. She peacefully entered eternal rest on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at her home in Durham, North Carolina, surrounded by her loving family.

At an early age, Mildred joined Siloam Baptist Church, where she remained a devoted and faithful member throughout her life. She served as an usher and provided dedicated leadership as President of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry for many years. She was also an active member of the Siloam Missionary Circle and a cherished voice in the Siloam Inspirational Choir. In addition, she shared her musical gifts with a broader community as a member of the North Carolina/Virginia Mass Choir under the direction of Floyd Banks.

Mildred graduated from Person County High School in 1967 and later attended Durham Technical Institute, where she majored in Business Administration. She was employed with the Duke University Department of Radiology for 38 years, earning the respect of her colleagues through her commitment, professionalism, and warm spirit.

Following her retirement, Mildred found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren and planning events and trips for her church family—activities that reflected her love for fellowship and service.

In addition to her parents, Mildred was preceded in death by her brother, Nathaniel Hawley.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted husband of 40 years, Deacon Charles Waller of the home; her son, Jonathan Hawley (Sonya) of Durham, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Justin Squires-Brunson and Jonathan “L.J.” Hawley, II, both of Durham, North Carolina; four sisters, Lois Parker (Travis) of Bahama, North Carolina, Dorothy Bass of Rougemont, North Carolina, Charlotte Timberlake (Eric) and Jackie Lyons (James), both of Durham, North Carolina; two brothers, Alfred Hawley of Honolulu, Hawaii and Curtis Hawley of Roxboro, North Carolina; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved her dearly.
