Merian Denise Torian

Merian Denise Torian, also known as “Hog,” age sixty-seven, of Roxboro, North Carolina, departed this life and entered eternal rest on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Roxboro Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Roxboro, NC. She was born on December 13, 1957, in Durham, North Carolina, to the late Christine Torian and the late Joseph Elliott. She attended Person County Schools and enjoyed attending church with her family at Olive Hill Baptist Church. In her younger days, she loved playing softball. She was a devoted fan of the Atlanta Braves and the UNC Tar Heels Men’s Basketball team.

In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ernestine Torian (Pewee), and her brother, John Thomas Torain (Bob).

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: two sons, Tracy Torain of Greensboro, NC, and Dion Torain of Timberlake, NC; one God-daughter, Taletha Hamlett of Roxboro, NC; her twin sister, Marian "Tiny" Torian of the home; two brothers, Carl Garland (Jackie) of Sandusky, OH, and Wayne Torain of Timberlake, NC; one sister-in-law, Blondie Torain of Durham, NC; five grandchildren, Tarlaysia Torain of Yanceyville, NC, Daekwon Hamlett, Justin, Ja’Quan, and Talecia Farrar, all of the home; two nieces, Jennifer Torain-Jones (William) of Rougemont, NC, and Shirley Torain-Frink (Tony) of Timberlake, NC; eight nephews, Timmy Torain (Antoinette) of Roxboro, NC, Maurice and Chris Garland of Durham, NC, Derrick Torain (Stephanie) of Durham, NC, and Demarco (Kathryn), Demarcus, and Demario Garland of Hopkinsville, KY; two uncles, Wilbur Torain and Michael Torain; two aunts, Carolyn Torain and Maxine Torain, all of Beckley, WV; her best friend and sister, Clara Lester; as well as many great-nephews, great-nieces, and other beloved relatives.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Alan L. Lawson Mortuary, 209 Chub Lake St., Roxboro, NC, from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The family will be present from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Olive Hill Baptist Church, 643 Olive Hill Church Rd., Leasburg, NC.

Minister Connie Dickens-McCain of First Baptist Church, Roxboro, NC, officiating, and Reverend Diane Farrish, Pastor of Olive Hill Baptist Church, Leasburg, NC, will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow at Olive Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
