Mabel Wagstaff Stanfield Obituary

Mabel Lee Wagstaff Stanfield “MaMae”, age 99 of Roxboro, North Carolina entered into eternal rest peacefully on Friday, May 24, 2024, at UNC Hospital in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Mabel was the youngest of eight children of the late Edward and Ella Lee Wagstaff.

Mabel professed her faith early in life and was a member of St. James Baptist Church, but later became a member of Mill Hill Baptist Church where she served on the Missionary Board until her health declined. Mabel was educated and received her high school diploma from the Caswell County Public School System.

During her early years, she learned how to sew and she would make clothes for her baby dolls, not long afterward she began to make her own clothing. Her other hobbies included cooking, crocheting, and completing word search puzzles. Her favorite pastime was crocheting and you would find many of her afghans, blankets, doilies, and other beautiful handmade items throughout the home. She also enjoyed making and sharing these items with family and friends. She made sure that she crocheted a blanket for all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mabel was an excellent seamstress, soon after she married John, she became the neighborhood seamstress. She would make prom dresses, wedding dresses, and clothing for many other special occasions. She loved children and as a result, she opened her home as an in-home daycare. Mabel loved to bake as well and would often bless her family with her blackberry cobblers, corn pudding, apple pies, and pineapple cakes just to name a few.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 77 years, John Junious “Shorty” Stanfield, and siblings, Maude, John, Nancy, Irla, Elizabeth, Fannie, and Henry, as well as one niece, whom she helped raise, Nora Farrish and one step-son, Joseph Womack.

She leaves to cherish her memories, one daughter Barbara Jean Stanfield of the home, four sons, John L. Stanfield (Aleen) of Hurdle Mills, NC, Charles E. Stanfield (Willie) of Hillsborough, NC, Reginald J. Stanfield (Maria) of Upper Marlboro, MD.,  and Dennis C. Stanfield (Joanne) of Hampton, VA., and eight grandchildren, Erica N. Stanfield-Griffin (Mark), Qiana Bradsher, Ihesha R. Lessa (Evan), Reginald Stanfield, II (Alexis), Darius Stanfield (Brianna), Janai Stanfield (Dontae), Jaylen Stanfield, and Jazmin Stanfield; nine great-grandchildren, Kiah Stanfield, Kimora Stanfield, Willow Blakeney, Taylor Lessa, Darius Stanfield Jr., Zalia Stanfield, Junious Lessa, Sahniya Stanfield, and Nori Kitchings; three nephews whom she helped raise, Reverend Hugh Farrish (Vera), William Farrish and Willie Farrish (Nugertha), one God-daughter Dawn Nelson, and one daughter-in-law Geraldine Womack, as well as, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
