James Hicks Obituary

Mr. James Edward Hicks, a dedicated father, hardworking provider, and pillar of the Hicks Heights community, departed this life and entered into eternal rest at the age of 80 on Friday, March 27, 2026, at The Caswell House in Yanceyville, North Carolina. He was born in Durham, North Carolina, on November 18, 1945, to the late J.B. Hicks, Sr. and Mamie Nelson Hicks. He joined Mill Hill Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful member until his health began to decline.

A man defined by his steadfast work ethic and devotion to his family, James spent 34 years as a loyal employee of Eaton Corporation. He took immense pride in his work, but his true motivation was always providing for his loved ones. As a father, he was a constant source of strength, guidance, and support, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished forever.

Beyond his professional life, James was a familiar and respected presence on the ballfields. He spent countless seasons umpiring softball games across Person County, where he was known for his fairness and his ability to command the field with a smile. When he wasn’t on the diamond, he was likely cheering on his favorite team. A diehard North Carolina fan, James truly bled Carolina Blue. His passion for the Tar Heels was infectious and remained a joyful staple of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Carletta Margaret Hicks of the home; his daughter, Candra Hicks (Kristina) of Richmond, Virginia; and one grandchild, Kayefi Soleil Scalici-Hicks of Richmond, Virginia; his siblings: J.B. Hicks, Jr. (Demetrius), Walter Hicks (Jackie), Doris Townsend, and Herbert Hicks (Yvonne), all of Roxboro; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends.

A public viewing will be held at the Alan L. Lawson Mortuary Chapel 209 Chub Lake Street, Roxboro, NC 27573 on Tuesday, March 31, from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. The family will be present during the final hour of the viewing.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Mill Hill Missionary Baptist Church, with Reverend Danielle Stone delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow at Mill Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, 1635 Mill Hill Road, Roxboro, North Carolina 27574.

In honor of his favorite team, the family invites attendees to wear a touch of Carolina Blue.
