James Henry Bailey

Mr. James Henry Bailey, age 75 was born April 23, 1947 in Dennison, Virginia to William Bailey and the late Lucy Obie Bailey. On the morning of Saturday, April 1, 2023, James passed peacefully in his sleep at Treyburn Rehabilitation Center, in Durham, North Carolina.

 As a youth, James did well in his studies. He was an eagle scout and even marched in New Jersey following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.  As a young man, James was diligent in his work as a salesman for many years in retail with Circuit City, Radio Shack and other companies. In 1994, James returned to Person County. 

In 2002, he graduated from Piedmont Community College with a diploma in Cosmetology. He was self-employed for many years as a community barber until his retirement. He would spend his free time enjoying gardening, taking care of trees and rose bushes. He always enjoyed a good cup of coffee in the morning with a dash of sarcastic humor, served right next to sunny side eggs and molasses. James was well known as a clever, quick-witted craftsman in his own right. He cared for his family and loved ones with courageous loyalty. He will be lovingly missed. 

In addition to his mother, James was preceded in death by two brothers, John “Nick” Bailey and Joseph Lee Bailey and one sister, Delores “Lois” Bailey.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Shirley Lois Bailey; three daughters, Shammara T. Dodd, Shahara Auriel Bailey and Shaina Vania Outlaw; two sons, Shariff Hassan Dodd and Shaman Isaiah Bailey. Two sisters, Shirley Farrish (Hassel) and Brenda Bailey; three brothers, Herbert, William and Anthony Bailey. One aunt, Minnie M. Bailey and one uncle, Ira L. Bailey. Seven granddaughters and special nephews, Aaron Thomas Garnett and Vaugh Bailey, as well as, a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Public Viewing will be held on Thursday, April 6th from 1- 5pm and Moments of Reflection from 5 to 7pm at the Alan L. Lawson Mortuary Chapel
