North On Friday afternoon, January 20, 2023, God sent one of His Special Angels to deliver the soul of His beloved, Gregory L. Winstead, from the toils of earthly labor to the reward of peaceful, eternal rest.
Gregory (Gregg or Hawkeye) was born February 9, 1953, in Person County. He was the first-born child and son of Charles Lindberg Winstead and Eva Jefferies Winstead. Gregg was the first son, first grandson and first nephew on his father’s side of the family. He was truly loved, and his two siblings would say “very spoiled”.
Gregg accepted Christ as his Savior at an early age, was baptized and joined the New Mount Zion Baptist Church. He attended Sunday School and sang in the Young Adult Choir. He also attended Bible Study and participated in various youth activities.
Gregg graduated from Person Senior High School in the Class of 1971, where he played sports. He exceled in football and basketball. He also had a passion for baseball, whether he was playing or umpiring. He continued his education at Shaw University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He used his degree to work for the Durham Department of Social Services. He also worked for the City of Durham with Go Durham Transportation, first as a driver and promoted to supervisor. The job Gregg seemed to have enjoyed the most was being a professional long distant driver for Academy Coach Lines. He was able to travel all over the country taking groups of people on trips and tours. During his travels, he made many friends and was given many different gifts due to his kindness and patience with the groups. He was always requested by Campbell University Baseball Team, and drove them all up and down the Eastern Seaboard.
Gregg was a handsome young man. He was always the “life of the party”. He enjoyed spending time with his family-whether it was a family reunion or family coming to Roxboro on vacation, cookouts, playing cards and laughing, Gregg was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
His father, Charles in 2004, his brother, Ronald in 2010 and his mother, Eva in 2011, preceded Gregg in death.
Those who are left to cherish his memory include his wife, Cheryl Denise Carter Winstead of Winston-Salem, NC; his daughter, LaTriece Winstead of Greensboro, NC; his sister, Sonja Winstead Beckford of Durham, NC; his grandchildren: Brianna Wade of Charlotte, NC; Brandon Wade of Greensboro, NC; and Brooke Wade, currently a student at NC A&T State University, Greensboro, NC; his great granddaughter, Jade Autry; his aunts: Emily W. Eily of Raleigh, NC; Gladys W. Thorp of East Orange, NJ; Lowillis W. Johnson of Linden, NJ; Dorothy H. Jeffries of Milton, NC; Corrine J. Bynum of Durham, NC; stepchildren: Rodriquis(Tanisha) Carter, JaShaun (Ingrid) Carter, and Sequoia (David) Miller; a very dear friend James Taborn (Sandra) of Roxboro; and a host of step grandchildren, one niece, Somia Beckford (Mustafa), one nephew, Kenneth Beckford, III and a host of cousins and friends.
An In Loving Memory Service will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 12 noon at the New Mount Zion Baptist Church 305 Walker Street Roxboro, NC. Rev. Dr. Dorwin L. Howard, Eulogist. ( MASK ARE REQUIRED).
