Gertrude Elizabeth Brooks Johnson was born in Halifax, Virginia on October 17, 1953 to the late Exie Lawson Brooks and Willie Lee Brooks. She was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, North Carolina.
She was raised and educated in Roxboro, NC, and was a long time, dedicated member of Greater Deliverance Tabernacle Church, where she embraced her work through ministry.
Gertie, as she was affectionately known, enjoyed spending time with her family and as her health began to fail, she made lasting memories with her family and loved ones daily through shared meals, reminiscing over yesteryear and finding joy and laughter in the midst of her pain. Gertie took great pride in maintaining a beautiful home, and one of her greatest past times was shopping to continue, to beautify her home – a place where she found comfort and peace.
Gertie, was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Thomas Hugh Johnson and three of her biological sons (during their childhood) – William Earl Wilkerson, Jr., Corey Wilkerson and Michael Wilkerson. Four siblings, Irving Crawley, John Crawley, Billy Jordan and Willie Ann Brooks Hyman.
She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Anthony Tyrone Wilkerson (Kelly) of Roxboro, NC, Kevin Tuck of Charlotte, NC and Kennard Richmond of Durham, NC. Four siblings, Amelia Rose Holloway and David Earl Brooks, Sr. (Vicentia) of Roxboro, NC; Carolyn Jean Brooks-DeBerry (Reginald, Sr.) of Rougemont, NC and Ronald Alexander Brooks (Crystal) of Roxboro, NC. Eight grandchildren, two sister-in-law, Jean Dance Crawley of South Boston, VA and Katie Cates of Roxboro, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
