Fannie Yvonne Farrish Fields was born March 6, 1944, to Dixie Perry Farrish and Hassel Lee Farrish of Roxboro, North Carolina. The second of nine children, Yvonne was born in Baltimore, Maryland at Baltimore City Hospitals. Her family moved back to Roxboro while Yvonne was a toddler. Yvonne graduated from Person County High School in 1961. She loved playing softball and basketball while in school and was recognized as the high school basketball star. In 1964, she moved back to Baltimore where she met Charles Fields, Jr., a staff sergeant in the Army. They married in 1965 and had their first child, Charles Fields III, the following year. Shortly thereafter in 1966, Yvonne and Charles III joined Charles Jr. in Okinawa, Japan after he spent six months serving in the Vietnam War. In 1967, Yvonne gave birth to Wanda Yvette Fields, completing their family. (While dictating this, she wanted to include how the servicemen and women in Okinawa used to come past their house all the time for a home cooked meal. She would hardly ever need to get Charles and Wanda Christmas gifts because all the Air Force women would watch the kids and shower them with gifts.) After several years, the family moved back to Baltimore. There, Yvonne began her second period of working at Sinai Hospital where she served as a medical surgical technician for a total of 48 years. After retiring in 2015, Yvonne enjoyed traveling, fishing, sewing, making arts and crafts, trips to the casino, cooking, baking, and making special items that people couldn’t find in the store. In 2020, Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young awarded Yvonne a certificate of recognition for 48 years of dedicated service to Sinai Hospital of Baltimore – Well Baby Nursery, commending her longtime commitment to excellence and caregiving to over 150,000 newborns and mothers. Yvonne leaves to cherish her memory two children, Charles Fields III and Wanda Yvette Honeyblue; five grandchildren, Kendall Ray Blackston (Shannon), Kamilah Juanita Blackston, Iman Ebony Blackston, Zane Deacon Fields, and Charli June Fields; two great grandchildren, Mason Ray Blackston and Madison Marie Blackston; grand-pooch, Bentley; eight siblings, Barbara Townes, Stella Jeffries (preceded in death) (Wesley), Colleen Goburn (Michael), Hasseline Crowder (Hiawatha), Hassel Farrish (Shirley), Nancy Bingham (Donald), Spencer Farrish, and Betty Farrish; sister-in-law, Deborah Fields; brothers-in-law, Ronald and Kevin Fields; best friend, Winfrey Jean “Wint” Grube; close friends, Carolyn Bullock Royster, Alice Lee, and Darius Burton; bonus son, Barry Bullock; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and other friends.
