Ms. Antoinette Geraldine Chase was born on September 12, 1921, to the late Mrs. Caroline C. Bias in Washington, D.C. Her Christian experience began at an early age at Lane CME Church.
She attended Love Joy Elementary School and Brown Junior High. Antoinette graduated from Cardoza High School in 1939. She was employed thirty years at the Office of Personnel Management formally known as the Civil Service Commission for the Federal Government. There she served as an Administrative Clerk, performing multiple clerical and secretarial duties until she retired in 1978. Antoinette was a dedicated Christian and worshipped Our Lord with all of her heart and soul. Her dedication was reflected in her work with the youth of the Church as she taught Sunday School and the Alter boys' and girls' classes. She was a diligent member of the Women's Day Committees, and she served on other various Church Committees. Antoinette helped to establish the Golden Challengers Club, who focused on the sick and shut in and she performed other missionary duties of the Church. Antoinette was the oldest living member of Lane CME Church at the age of 102 years old and she was affectionately known as the Mother of the Church.
To know Antoinette was to know a proud, no nonsense, African American woman dedicated to her family and to the church. She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, and aunt, who provided home care for multiple sick family members throughout the years. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and the fine arts. She also had a strong liking for jazz and show tunes.
Left to cherish her memories is her devoted great nephew, Robert Cook (Gloria) of Roxboro, North Carolina, one great niece, Olivia Chase and a second great nephew, Maurice Chase both of Washington, D.C. In addition, there are four great, great nephews, Robert Cook Jr. of New York, Anthony Leonard of Los Angeles, California, Robert Sowell of Washington, D. C., Oliver Sowell of Texas; two great, great nieces, Adrianne Cheatham, and Carmen Martinez (Mitchell) both of Maryland; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.
